If you have swimmers in your family, you know the crucial role towels play in a swimmer’s bag. Drying off and keeping warm between races and after workouts is important for keeping swimmers’ muscles warm and loose.

What is a microfiber towel?

Microfiber towels are made of microfiber, which actually refers to any fiber which is smaller than the diameter of a silk thread. The biggest reason why microfiber is used is due to its excellent absorbency.

If you’re unfamiliar with microfiber towels, we’ve rounded up a few reasons why your swimmer should have one in their swim bag.

Three Reasons Your Swimmer Needs a Microfiber Towel

1. Microfiber towels are ultra absorbent.

Like we mentioned earlier, the extra absorbency of microfiber towels is the main appeal for swimmers. As the name suggests, these towels are made up of many small, thin fibers. These microfibers, in their size and abundance, absorb and release water and moisture much more easily than conventional towels. This speeds up the process of drying off after a race or workout, and the quick release of water means the microfiber towel will be dry and ready to go again the next time your swimmer needs it.

2. Microfiber towels take up little space in a swim bag.

Have you ever peeked into your swimmer’s bag? Chances are, it’s stuffed to the gills with training gear, clothes, and snacks. Cotton and terry cloth towels can be bulky and take up a lot of space in a bag--something that’s already most likely at a premium. While extra-absorbent, microfiber towels are typically a fraction of the size of a conventional towel, can be stored more compactly, and are significantly lighter in weight--especially when you consider the weight of a cotton towel that’s full of water.

3. Microfiber towels dry quickly, and are more hygienic than regular towels.

Because they don’t retain water for very long, microfiber towels are much more hygienic than a typical bath or beach towel. Wet towels sitting in a bag or heaped on a pool deck are breeding grounds for bacteria and mold. An unpleasant odor can often accompany wet towels as well, which will then affect clothes and other items in your swimmer’s bag.

Microfiber towels don’t retain moisture. Their quick-dry feature makes them resistant to bacteria and odors, and they won’t need to be laundered as often as conventional towels, either.
